The Saperavi grape, an ancient variety native to Georgia, is gaining recognition in New York’s Finger Lakes wine region! Brought to the area by Dr. Konstantin Frank in the 1960s, it remained obscure until 2014 when the Tax and Trade Bureau officially recognized it. Saperavi produces diverse wine styles, from semi-sweet to deep, ebony-hued wines aged in traditional clay amphorae. Lasha Tsatava, co-founder of the nonprofit Saperica, envisions Saperavi becoming a signature wine of the Finger Lakes, with events like the Saperavi Festival promoting its unique qualities and potential.
